U.S. Made Flag

American FlagHuge flag requires GIGANTIC pole and some serious engineering

Things are big in Texas: see the tallest outdoor flagpole, 308 feet, in Laredo Texas.

If you've ever bought an outdoor flagpole and struggled to get it mounted securely and in the right setting so that it displays the Stars and Stripes, the American Flag in all its glory, then you've probably brought home a pole that ís poorly designed, is made out of cheap materials or is the wrong size for its use.

Imagine what was involved in the design and engineering of, purportedly, the tallest flagpole in the United States. It stands in the parking lot of a Laredo National Bank drive-up facility in Laredo, Texas. The 308-foot-tall flagpole, which flies a 100-foot by 50-foot American flag, was designed by Steve Symonds and his company.

The $300,000, 52-ton pole rests in a cylinder embedded in a foundation that is 27 feet deep, 15 feet in diameter and made of 800 tons of concrete. The cylinder, 27 feet deep and seven feet in diameter, houses the base of the pole which, itself, is five feet in diameter. Subsequent pole sections vary in length from 35 to 40 feet and diminish in diameter width from the five-foot base to 16 inches at the top of the pole.

The flag is raised and lowered by a cable housed within the pole and is driven by a two-horsepower winch. A rotating ball, measuring five feet in diameter, sits on top of the pole and allows the flag to swivel on the pole flying free with the wind, which greatly increases the life of the flag.

Residential flagpoles need serious engineering too.

Even when you're talking about rather small residential flagpoles, there are any number of considerations that must be factored into the design of a substantial pole and its various accessories. Learn more about commercial flagpoles and residential flagpoles and how to select the one that is right for your home or business.
