how close can I put a flagpole to a building?
The size flag to be flown will determine the distance of the flagpole from the building.
Allow at least one foot or more than the length of the flag. If possible allow extra distance so that you have an option to fly a larger flag in the future if you choose to do so. A distance of 1-1/2 times the flag's length will allow one size larger flag to be flown. This will also assure you will be able to display the flag at 1/2 staff on Memorial Day, Patriot Day, Pearl Harbor Rememberance Day and Peace Officers Memorial Day.
When one flag is displayed, the horizontal length of the flag should be approximately 1/4 to 1/3 the height of the flagpole. This guideline applies to commercially manufactured ground set flagpoles 20' and taller. When multiple flags are displayed, the second flag is normally one size smaller than the main flag. If your flagpole is 20' tall the appropriate flag size is 3'x5' to 4'x6', therefore the flagpole should be no closer then 9 feet to the building.
